Heart Shaped Sugar Cookies are the best treats for Valentine’s Day! If you don’t have any idea how to make a surprise for your partner, this is it. She/He will love these little buddies. They are decorated with beautiful homemade fondant which will make the sugar cookies more appealing.
Have you always had to buy sugar cookies for Valentine’s Day to make your spouse and family happy? That’s not the case anymore, because now you can make your own sugar cookies from scratch. They are so easy and beautiful that you’ll never go to buy them again.
This is the classic sugar cookie recipe and you can make it in any shape you wish, but today we will bake for this special LOVE day. Let’s do hearts everywhere. This recipe is so easy to make that you can involve your kid to help you.
This was the first recipe I had my son help with, and he just loved it. That was very fun to him and it ended up being a little of “mom and son” quality time, and finally giving daddy the cookies on Valentine’s day, that made him the happiest kid.

You can decorate them in different ways with fondant, frosting, icing, or with glazing. If you want to use frosting, I recommend Almond Buttercream Frosting.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Butter – Make sure to use unsalted butter at room temperature.
- Sugar – the crucial ingredient.
- Egg – will help to form a beautiful dough.
- All-Purpose Flour
- Vanilla Extract – it’s optional. But I recommend it because it gives these cookies an extra depth of flavor.
- Baking Powder – slightly lift the cookies while keeping their beautiful shape.
Your necessary equipment:
- Heart Shaped Cookie Cutter,
- Cookie Tray,
- Parchment Paper,
- Homemade Fondant (in this link you can also learn how to make and color your fondant from home) or Store-Bought Fondant
How to make Heart Shaped Sugar Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350 F
- Beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract and keep beating until thoroughly combined.
- Finally add the baking powder and the flour, one cup at a time, and mix just until combined.
- Roll out the cookie dough and use a small Heart Cookie Cutter to cut out the Heart-Shaped Sugar Cookies
- Bake in an oven for 5-6 minutes. Check on the cookies at the 4-minute mark, because you don’t want to overbake them. The edges will be golden when they are ready to come out of the oven.
- Cool the cookies down before you start placing the fondant on them.
- Shape the fondant with the heart cookie cutter so it will be equally decorated all over the cookies. You can make your fondant decorations how you’ll prefer.
- Add the fondant to the sugar cookies.
Can You Make Cookies Ahead of Time?
Yes, you can! Make sure before storing the cookies are completely cooled down and fully set, so they don’t smudge onto other cookies when stored. They can be stored at room temperature for 2 to 3 days.
If you add these types of cookies to the fridge they can dry out, so it’s not recommended to store them for more than 1 day in the fridge.
They also can be frozen best after baking. Place them in an airtight container and freeze them for up to 1 month.
